Many funeral homes today are part of large conglomerates. This can lead to more standardized but perhaps less personal service. It is worth knowing whether you are dealing with a local or national organization.
The Funeral Rule passed by the Federal Trade Commission in 1994 requires that all funeral homes must provide the following basic services: \012Funeral planning\012Securing permits and death certificates\012Preparing notices\012Sheltering the remains\012Coordinating arrangements with cemetery, crematory or other third parties.
There are almost too many additional services available to name. Among them are such things as:\012Viewings\012Limousines\012Graveside services\012Flowers\012Monuments\012Grief Counseling\012Video Tributes\012
The Funeral Rule also requires that funeral directors provide their clients with an itemized list of each item and its cost. You can never be required to accept an entire package. You can choose and pay for only those items that you want.
Do you require a deposit? Can we pay you upon receipt of the life insurance pay out? Do you offer financing?
