This question will tell you if the contractor is informed about the lead issue or if he will downplay it to get the job. Lead paint is a reality that is best viewed from an informed perspective - and both the window installer and the homeowner should be informed.
How long is the typical payback period (the time it will take for energy savings to offset the costs of added efficiency)?
Argon is a colorless, odorless, non-flammable, non-reactive, inert gas. Argon gas fills are used to reduce heat loss in sealed units by slowing down convection inside the air space. Argon gas is extremely cost-efficient, and works well with Low-e coated glazing.
Low E glass was introduced in 1979. The E stands for emissivity. Low E glass works by reflecting heat back to its source. It does this by utilizing an ultra thin metallic coating on or in the glass.
Yes, there is a tax credit for windows placed in service in 2009 and 2010. From January 1 - May 31, 2009 all ENERGY STAR qualified windows can qualify for the tax credit.
Beginning June 1, 2009, to qualify for the tax credit, windows (and doors and skylights) must have a U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) less than or equal to 0.30. This is a super efficient window, and most ENERGY STAR windows will not qualify.
You can find the U-factor and SHGC on the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label. NFRC is the only federally recognized organization for determining the energy performance of windows, doors and skylights. Please see the NFRC website for information concerning product performance.
This stringent criteria was put in place by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed into law on February 17, 2009.
